Description

« Black Butterfly », the eighth studio album by Brooklyn Funk Essentials, includes their recent hits « Never Give Up », « Bust The Bus Stop » and « Life During Wartime ». Broadcast on BBC Radio 2, Jazz FM, 6 Music, as well as numerous stations in Europe and America. The album was produced and co-written by bassist Lati Kronlund and features Alison Limerick, Ebba Åsman and Desmond Foster on vocals.Kronlund and Limerick are delighted by the recent resurgence of interest in « Where Love Lives ». Kronlund wrote and produced this track for Limerick in 1990. Remixed by Frankie Knuckles and David Morales, it became a club classic and even featured in John Lewis's Christmas advertisement this year. Arthur Baker heard the original version in a club in 1991 and contacted Kronlund to collaborate; that is how Brooklyn Funk Essentials was born.Since then, Brooklyn Funk Essentials has built a loyal international audience. Blending soul, hip-hop, spoken word, jazz, Latin music and, of course, funk, the group began its musical journey by experimenting with drum machines and loops at Baker's Shakedown Sound Studio in Jersey City, in search of the perfect beat. Their early recordings featured luminaries such as Maceo Parker, Lenny Pickett, Tower of Power Horns, Michigan & Smiley and Dizzy Gillespie, resulting in their acclaimed debut album, « Cool & Steady & Easy » (1994).In April 2024, Kronlund reunited with Baker in Miami and rediscovered recordings with percussion prodigy Bashiri Johnson, a source of inspiration for the next chapter in the Brooklyn Funk Essentials story. The group's critically acclaimed catalog also includes « In The Buzzbag » (1998), « Make Them Like It » (2000), « Watcha Playin' » (2008), « Funk Ain't Ova » (2015), « Stay Good » (2019) and « Intuition » (2023).
