Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks was written, produced, and performed by Brian Eno with his brother Roger and Daniel Lanois. The music was recorded in 1983 for the documentary, For All Mankind, directed by Al Reinert. The film, instead of focusing solely on the facts, sought to evoke the human aspects of this extraordinary odyssey. Told by the astronauts themselves, they remember and comment on the images they had the privilege of seeing, experiencing, on behalf of humanity (For All Mankind). On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, a new remastered and expanded edition with 11 new compositions reimagining the soundtrack of For All Mankind has been recorded. The music from the original album has been streamed over 300 million times. Since its release, many songs from Apollo have been used in numerous films and advertisements including Trainspotting, Traffic, and 28 Days Later. An Ending (Ascent) was also used during the opening ceremony of the London Olympics in 2012.
