The leader of Primal Scream, Bobby Gillespie teamed up with Jehnny Beth, solo artist and singer of Savages, for their album "Utopian Ashes." Preceded by the single 'Remember We Were Lovers,' the tracks address themes of loss, incommunicability, and the difficulty of expressing emotions that a married couple goes through when they realize their relationship is falling apart.
'Utopian Ashes' draws on the tradition of "country soul classics" such as 'Grievous Angel' by Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris, and also evokes the albums of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra, to tackle the theme of love turning to bitterness....
Bobby and Jehnny met in 2015 during a performance with Suicide at the Barbican. The following summer, she joined Primal Scream on stage for a cover of Some Velvet Morning by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood, which cemented their relationship. In 2017, sessions took place in Paris, accompanied by J.Beth's musical partner, Johnny Hostile, and the rest of Primal Scream. Their initial project focused on electronic sounds gradually evolved into a richer atmosphere blending soul, country, blues, and rock 'n' roll.
