One might forget in our era of widespread simplification, but a successful pop music record often hides a complex architecture. With their debut album, aptly titled ‘Prototype’, Bleu Shinobi reconnects with the ambition and wild freedom of the golden age of pop music while injecting a good dose of modernity. This is expressed through a voracious appetite for a multitude of influences that goes beyond the spiritual forefathers one might think of, primarily the Beatles and the Beach Boys. Between the lines of Bleu Shinobi's repertoire, one can find the rhythmic coolness of jazz and the evocative power of psychedelic rock. Let’s not be mistaken, Bleu Shinobi is a quintessential pop band, deeply in love with melodies and rich arrangements, never flashy, always serving the songs first and foremost. These are written and recorded as invitations to travel. One encounters a man in a meteorite, another searching for his home, a woman who fills her immortality by partying, and a pirate who doesn’t know how to swim. After ‘Daydreaming’, a notable first E.P. in 2021, the band from Tours presents with this ‘Prototype’ a polished and personal work, enriched by collaborations and a collective approach to composition. Twelve tracks that navigate between melancholic ballads, sunny rock, post-yéyé, airy and rebellious vocalizations, and chamber pop reimagined with a maximalist taste. One no longer knows which foot to dance on, which time zone one is in, and simply surrenders to this blend of obviousness, emotion, and hedonism steeped in sincerity. It is worth noting that Bleu Shinobi is an active member of the Tours collective Télécascade alongside the bands Anna, Jean Vivier, Coconut, and Leni, comprising 15 musicians with a free and collaborative approach.
