Description

The story of the infamous Ted Kaczynski, known as the "Unabomber," has been brought to life by American director Tony Stone. Ted K. Kaczynski is known for tragically murdering three people and injuring 23 others with bombs sent through the mail, but also for his numerous writings on the evils of technology that he composed during his primitive residency in the woods of Montana. Tony Stone's choice to entrust the film's music to the renowned electronic artist Blanck Mass is somewhat ironic and creates an obvious tension, perfect for the controversial and complex subject of the film. In 2020, Blanck Mass signed his first film score for the soundtrack of Nick Rowland's critically acclaimed film, Calm with Horses. This expansion into new realms of melodic composition and textural exploration has brought Blanck Mass many new fans, including BBC's number one film critic, Mark Kermode, who proclaimed it the score of the year. In 2021, Blanck Mass won the prestigious Ivor Novello Award for Best Original Film Score and firmly established himself at the forefront of the latest wave of experimental soundscape wizards. Recording during the lockdown in his studio in Edinburgh, Scotland, Ben Power, aka Blanck Mass, found himself in the perfect setting for a musical piece intended to capture the isolation central to Kaczynski's story. Ben Power was also working with a director located in a 10-hour time zone difference, which forced him to work in the middle of the night during many sessions and added an appropriate intensity to the composition process. He wanted the project to feel epic and drew inspiration from the legends Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone to capture the energy of good versus evil. The sweet madness of the resulting sound is exquisite and slowly builds in intensity and despair as the score progresses. Blanck Mass perfectly captures the complexity, terror, and deep emotion of the film while presenting an album that is often breathtakingly beautiful and always masterful, standing on its own as a work of art.
