L'ensemble Graindelavoix : a pinnacle in the interpretation of sacred and secular medieval music from 13th century France. In this second part of the trilogy of 13th century music recorded by Glossa, considered through the lenses of religious, social, and political debates, centered on the cathedral builder Villard de Honnecourt, Bjorn Schmelzer and Graindelavoix reveal how music reflected the movement of the social fabric, particularly addressing the recent brotherhoods of northern France. The cornerstone of this proposal lies in the seven parts of the devotional cycle of the trouvère Jaikes de Cambrai, which Schmelzer compares to contemporary art installations and where he observes the reflection of practices already perceived in Villard's notebook (Ossuaires, the first part of the trilogy). Schmelzer highlights the unity of Jaikes' cycle by interpreting it in the order intended by its author, whom he describes as "a playwright connecting words, emotional responses, and music in an absolutely innovative way." The disc was recorded at the church of Braine in Picardy, in an acoustics perfectly suited to this repertoire, complemented by other songs of trouvères who, like Jaikes, are practically unknown today: Robert de Reins La Chièvre, Martin le Beguin de Cambrai, and the canon of Saint-Quentin. These sound fragments thus constitute a new exploration of this musical (and interpretative) territory of Gothic art, whose colors are each time (re)discovered thanks to the kaleidoscopic intuition of the singers and instrumentalists of Graindelavoix.
