If one could afford this irreverence towards the great Billie Holiday, one might say that Lady in Satin smells of the pine as much as of satin. This is the second to last album she recorded, and the last released during her lifetime. Billie Holiday was then dreaming of languid and over-orchestrated music, like that of Frank Sinatra at the same time. The conductor Ray Ellis would offer it to her, tailored with forty musicians and Claus Ogerman, the arranger specializing in stretched orchestral panoramas. A very luxurious and delicate setting for Billie Holiday's singing, which nevertheless seems to tremble with cold every second. Her voice is recognizable, but it is worn, dried up, it has lost its muffled purr. The fragile shadow of what she once was. This indecent music of elegance and grandeur only heightens the contrast with a decayed and solitary voice. It’s beautiful, but it’s sad.
