In the 1950s, as popular black music genres were adopted by white teenagers, black music returned to more authentic styles. By 1960, popular black music had turned away from the upbeat, largely uptempo rhythm and blues that had been embraced by the mainstream, moving towards a more emotive style. The term "soul" appeared here and there, but it only entered common usage after the success of I Believe To My Soul by Ray Charles in January of that year. This breathtaking collection of blues and spiritual music offers you some of the most passionate and compelling vocal performances ever recorded. The illustrated accompanying booklet provides historical context and explains some of the technical features that make these beautiful songs the precursors of soul music.
