Ben Nichols, an iconic figure on the Memphis rock scene with Lucero, unveils *In the Heart of the Mountain*, a rare and deeply personal solo album, at 50 years old. More stripped-down than his previous works, he explores an intimate facet of his art, carried by his gravelly voice and a raw acoustic guitar, occasionally enhanced by electric solos and subtle percussion. Recorded at Southern Grooves Studio in Memphis under the guidance of Matt Ross-Spang, the album features Morgan Eve Swain (The Devil Makes Three, Brown Bird) on violin and backing vocals, Cory Branan on guitars, and Todd Beene (Chuck Ragan, Glossary) on pedal steel and electric guitars. Nichols describes it as his freest work, crafted without compromise, inspired by the landscapes of his native Arkansas: “A record fueled by the memory of the rivers, fields, and mountains of my childhood, that mythological Arkansas my family called ‘home.’”
