Description

"Regards de l’Est" brings together two landmark works from the chamber music repertoire of Central Europe, composed half a century apart and illustrating the correspondence between the intensity of romantic passions and the personal dramas of each artist. On one hand, the Trio op. 15 by Bedrich Smetana (1855) is a heart-wrenching cry of pain: composed by Smetana following the death of his four-year-old daughter, the work is dominated by a dark passion and a character of a funeral march, while also being representative of the beginnings of the Czech national school. On the other hand, the Trio op. 29 by Dora Pejacevic (1910) transports us to the dawn of the 20th century, revealing the powerful voice of the first recognized Croatian composer. Filled with lyricism and virtuosity, the work claims the most elegant late romanticism, while showcasing a rich and personal harmonic writing. Together, these two works offer a fascinating dialogue around the expression of suffering and romantic fervor, bridging Prague and the heart of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire.
