Io9.com ranked McCreary among the top ten science fiction composers of all time, and WIRED magazine named him one of the five "secret weapons" of the television industry. McCreary was voted "Composer of the Year - Television" by his peers at ASCAP, the first award of its kind, and received an Emmy nomination in 2015 for his work on Outlander.
