Recorded in early spring 1974 in several London studios, “Axe Victim” was released on EMI's Harvest label in June of the same year and was critically acclaimed. The album featured the band's first lineup: Bill Nelson (vocals, lead guitar, acoustic guitar, piano), Ian Parkin (rhythm guitar, acoustic guitars, organ), Rob Bryan (bass, vocals) and Nicholas Chatterton-Dew (drums). A promising debut album, praised by DJ John Peel (who had championed Bill Nelson's work since the release of his first self-produced album, “Northern Dream,” in 1971), Peel declaring “Axe Victim” as one of his favorite albums of 1974. Although Bill Nelson was still searching for his style, the record contained excellent tracks, including the classic “Adventures In A Yorkshire Landscape,” as well as other notable songs like “Night Creatures,” “Third Floor Heaven” (featuring Jenny Haan, the singer from Babe Ruth), “Jets At Dawn” and the grand “Darkness (L'Immoraliste)”.
