After an intensive touring year in Europe in 2017, the Soweto group is back with a second album Emakhosini as impactful as their first, Our Truth, released in 2016 and praised by the French media. Like on this first record, the group offers two long tracks of tribal and funky trance, Moya and Insimbi, which evoke through their intensity the afro-beat of Fela without being inspired by it. For the music of Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness (BCUC) (which can be translated as The Man on the march towards his freedom of consciousness) draws from the cultural roots of the South African members of the group, Zulu, Sotho, Shangaan, to invent an electric and contemporary version of their musical traditions. BCUC builds on these ancestral rhythms and spiritual chants a music tinged with soul, rap, and driven by a punk energy.
Emakhosini closes with their adaptation of the African American gospel Nobody Knows, the single from the album, which well synthesizes their 'afro-psychedelic' universe where the minimal instrumentation, percussion, voices, and an electric bass provide a rare emotional intensity.
