Finlandia is the perfect finale for this series of recordings of Sibelius, which notably includes the recording of four of his symphonies. His foray into the world of impressionistic tones gave birth to the seascapes of The Oceanides. According to the composer, it is "pure inspiration" that led to the composition of the popular Finlandia and its world-renowned hymn-like motif. This album arrives a month after the 90th anniversary of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and includes the composer's greatest masterpieces. Thomas Søndergård is the principal conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales as well as the principal guest conductor of the Royal Scottish Orchestra; it is a very rare privilege to hold such positions in two of the largest British orchestras.
