Five years after their dazzling debut album, Ufo Bar, the Italians of Banda Maje, masters of cinematic funk, return with Costa Sud, taking us to the heart of their "Salifornia": a southern province with sun-drenched coasts and dilapidated buildings, where dreams of exotic escape are born and flourish. Once again, behind the eight tracks on the album (and at the wheel of the fiery red Alfasud that adorns the cover) is composer and keyboardist Peppe Maiellano. He meticulously composed each piece for his virtuoso accomplices: a true family of exuberant musicians, scattered between Salerno and Naples, all united by deep ties to the region and a shared faith in the power of independent artistic creation. The Costa Sud imagined by Banda Maje is a shimmering ribbon of sun-scorched asphalt, stretching between the sea and the centuries-old pine forests of the Gulf of Salerno. It is a land of enchanting yet wounded places, where the grace of ancient Greek civilization coexists, in uneasy silence, with the scars of rampant urbanization and premature abandonment. Conceived and recorded entirely in southern Italy, the album nonetheless casts its gaze toward the horizon. While Neapolitan funk and golden-age Italian film soundtracks remain the very essence of the band's DNA, this album welcomes new influences from across the Atlantic, blending Italy, Brazil, Africa, and contemporary sounds into its unique vision of the "Global South."
