Description

Based on Shakespeare's most famous romantic piece, the production of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet as a ballet was bold at the time. This work was composed during a period of artistic upheaval under the Soviet regime; debates arose over the choices between a happy or tragic ending for the productions. Well-known movements like The Dance of the Knights helped maintain Romeo and Juliet as Prokofiev's best work. The cycle of Prokofiev's Symphonies conducted by Marin Alsop and very well received by critics was considered "an outstanding achievement" by BBC Music Magazine.
