The story of BadBadNotGood is irresistible: three young jazz students, hip-hop fans, who, through sheer talent and experimentation, have in just a few years joined their idols in the studio and built a natural bridge between the two musical genres. Tyler The Creator, Danny Brown, Franck Ocean (nothing less) have already worked with the Canadian trio, which has made a specialty of these high-profile collaborations. The latest example: Sour Soul, a brilliant rap album tinged with jazz (more than the reverse) released last year and on which Ghostface Killah and MF Doom played the role of marquee veterans. Today, it may be a more focused record that is taking shape with IV, a new album due out on June 8 and announced as the follow-up to the excellent III released in 2014. Joined by saxophonist Leland Whitty at the beginning of the year, Matthew A. Tavares, Chester Hansen and Alexander Sowinski nevertheless could not resist drawing from their address book, with an announced feature from the prodigy Kaytranada, and chose to invite Samuel T. Herring of Future Islands for the first single, on vocals on this very gentle Time Moves Slow: Last month, BadBadNotGood treated their supporters to a strictly original track, the shimmering instrumental Speaking Gently, a 4-minute funk-jazz feat that once again bears witness to the creative intelligence of this futuristic group.
