Surnamed "the greatest unknown band in Britain" in the late 1970s by the former editor of the music section of the International Times, Bachdenkel will remain a cult band, their pair of albums attracting late attention from collectors and admiration from fellow musicians like the band Mercury Rev.
Formed in Birmingham in 1968, Bachdenkel was initially part of the burgeoning local underground scene, but would spend most of their career in France.
In June 1970, they booked time in a studio in Paris to record their first album "Lemmings". The sessions took on prodigious proportions, but as an acceptable deal with a British/American major did not materialize, the record was only released in France three years later.
The recording of the second album 'Stalingrad' in late 1975 was a less complicated experience, but it proved once again difficult to place. Ultimately, the whole was self-released in 1977, when its appearance unfortunately coincided with the punk explosion.
A three-CD set, 'Rise And Fall' is the first complete anthology of this unfortunate but extremely talented band.
It features their two albums and adds contemporary excerpts, alternative versions, demos, and live cuts as well as demo recordings from 1967-68 by the pre-Bachdenkel group U-No-Who, which briefly attracted the interest of the newly formed Apple Organization.
