Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, the mysterious steel pan group from Hamburg, has become a cult band worldwide. With a series of singles and three critically acclaimed albums, they have set a very high bar, which they clearly intend to push even further with this new album. On their fourth album BRSB, Bacao is back with the same secret ingredient, in an intrinsically different version. They cover songs that span all genres, ranging from mega hits to underground album tracks, which they make their own with their unique approach to the traditional steel pans of Trinidad and Tobago. While part of the appeal of a new album from Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band is discovering the new covers, it is equally intriguing to see the original tracks they have concocted, and at this level, this album is remarkable. In terms of covers, the influence of West Coast hip-hop is significant, with tracks from Game & 50 Cent, Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg, and Tupac, which gain new energy and lend themselves well to the steelpan treatment. There is also a disco classic, contemporary hip-hop tracks, and an oddity, the theme from the hit series Stranger Things. With BRSB, the band takes us on a journey covering a myriad of energies, tempos, and moods, all while adorning it with their signature color.
