Azawan

Description

By establishing a new connection between chaâbi and jazz, Azawan (the term means "music" in Kabyle) aims to extend the openness initiated by El Hadj M'hamed El Anka (1907-1978) and to contribute to the blending of African and European influences that have nourished chaâbi since its origins: those of Arab-Andalusian culture, Jewish culture, as well as Berber culture, whose uniqueness and importance are too often ignored or overlooked. Thus, Didine Kati and Martin Guerpin, with their quintet, bring together two musical traditions that may seem foreign at first but actually share more than one commonality. As El Anka rightly sensed, this dialogue can prove to be both fruitful, creative, and respectful of traditions.
