In this new album, the Tel Aviv trumpeter responds to the turbulences of our troubled times with a kind of flamboyance, leading his band, united by years of complicity, through the meanderings of a five-part suite that covers the full range of emotions—from hope to despair, indignation, and the deepest melancholy.
The melodic simplicity of the final track, "The Seventh," composed by Avishai Cohen’s teenage daughter, Amalia, offers a contrasting sense of calm to this work of great emotional intensity. It finds a kind of apotheosis in the haunting harmonies of the Adagio assai from Ravel’s famous Piano Concerto in G Major, which the quartet has made a regular part of its concert repertoire for years. Ashes to Gold was recorded in November 2023 at Studios La Buissonne in the south of France.
