With Les Regrets, David Fontanesi reopens the madrigal to contemporaneity without reducing it to either a citation or an archaeological mannerism. Sixteen pages arranged in four groups of four, for five, six, and eight voices, take the sonnets of Joachim Du Bellay as a matrix of form, syntax, and moral tension. The anaphoras, the interrogations, the final sententiae, the memory of exile, and civic disenchantment translate into procedures of imitation, vertical accumulation, suspension, and cadential release. The result is a rare cycle of literary and contrapuntal consciousness, in which the lesson of the 16th century is refracted through a present that still entrusts beauty, language, and polyphony with a function of truth. Its quadruple architecture seals this coherence with a symbolic force.
