In a time before history, in an era before memory, they roamed the vastness of the Earth, a Earth still spared by the rapacious hand and plague-bearing nature of a misnamed civilization. A Earth where the clinical and dissecting sterility of science had not yet drained nature of its essence, nor the world of its magical power. A time when light was not yet an immediately accessible commodity, disrupting the rhythms of existence, a time when shadows were deeper and concealed dreams, nightmares, friends, and foes. A time when there was no certainty that dawn would rise after the long hours of night, but where every moment vibrated with the vibrant and vital wonder of existence. They walked in the shadow of giants, the true kings of all existence who knew no fear in the face of the agitated and malevolent spirits of men. They lived on the edge of death, more alive than we could ever be, in a time when humanity was part of the miraculous and complex fabric of life, and not a separate demon, setting fire to Eden... The British group Wyrdstæf invokes the spirit of the Paleolithic and Mesolithic, eras when our distant ancestors roamed a world of ice and natural wonders, leading a life of hunter-gatherers amidst incredible megafauna. An existence of brutal harshness in a virgin but unforgiving world. Through a hypnotic and enchanting elixir blending layered diphonic chants, distorted guitars, field recordings, and ritual songs, they seek to reach back to a distant past, not to imitate it, but to attempt to reconnect with the essence of a time that resides in the depths of cultural memory and the collective unconscious. After appearing on national television to perform *The Saga of Egil*, an Icelandic family saga recounting the life of Egil Skallagrimsson, a 10th-century warrior-poet and farmer, on the show *Britain’s Most Historic Towns* aired on Channel 4, the group self-produced their first EP, *Great Migrations*, in 2021 – a meditation on ancestral movements and extinction.
