Description

This release restores the intimate face of Giovanni Sgambati, the patient architect of instrumental renewal in Rome during a time still governed by theater in Italy. Between Lyric Pieces, Nocturnes, Poetic Melodies, and Gluck's Melody, the miniature becomes a workshop of proportions, European memory, and keyboard poetry. The program shows how the legacies of Liszt and Schumann, the Italian cantabile, and a closely governed formal discipline coexist within the same language. What emerges is a portrait of rare refinement, in which the 19th-century salon opens up to a cultivated, cosmopolitan, and profoundly Roman vision of instrumental modernity.
