The guitar is traditionally reserved for the Spanish. But Timothy Bowers, born near London in 1954, has found a more English side to the instrument: a subtle emotion expressed in accessible language, natural elegance, sharp and clear textures, as well as a certain restraint; by broadening his frame of reference, much of this music possesses the poised delicacy of a Japanese watercolor and the touch of folk song that accompanies the instrument itself. This album, the first dedicated to Bowers' guitar music, bears the mark of authenticity: it is performed by musicians with whom he has worked closely, and the recording was supervised by the composer himself.
