Recorded in May and June 1955 for the Decca label, *Jazz Studio 4* was Jack Millman's first album as a leader, as well as an ambitious showcase of his talents as a composer and instrumentalist. All the compositions are his own and are performed by a flexible lineup featuring some of the best musicians from the West Coast jazz scene. The varied configurations — ranging from tight small groups to larger ensembles — were shaped by the arrangements of major figures in jazz writing such as Shorty Rogers, Jack Montrose, Jimmy Giuffre, Johnny Mandel, Bill Holman, and Pete Rugolo, thus painting a unique portrait of Millman's musical universe.
