Gewitternacht : Les fils de Bach et ses élèves

Description

Gewitternacht (“Night of Storms”) explores the fascinating musical world that emerged after the death of Johann Sebastian Bach in 1750 — a symbolic turning point in the history of music. This period marks the emergence of new styles such as “Empfindsamkeit” (the sensitive style) and “Sturm und Drang,” favoring emotion, subjectivity, and the expressiveness of musical gesture. These ideas paved the way for the Classical and then Romantic eras. The five composers presented here were all connected to Johann Sebastian Bach, closely or otherwise, and include among his pupils, notably, of course, his two sons, Carl Philipp Emanuel and Johann Christoph Friedrich. Surprisingly, the solid training they received from Bach is less evident than the marked differences within this young generation of composers, among whom the elder of Bach’s two sons established himself as a precursor.
