Country Dream by Kiyoshi Sugimoto is a Japanese album from 1970 where the guitarist develops a very melodic modern jazz, still close to post-bop, but already open to more lyrical and contemporary colors. The record features a clear, fluid, and singing guitar style, supported by a very elegant approach to improvisation. Less electric and funky than his albums from the mid-70s, it favors a warmer, introspective, and airy atmosphere. The arrangements remain understated yet very refined, allowing the themes to breathe and highlighting Sugimoto's delicate touch. Today, Country Dream is often seen as a beautiful, softer, and more modern jazz facet of his work, before his more pronounced shift towards fusion.
