With the works of Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the art of composition reaches qualitative and aesthetic heights that their contemporaries already refer to as "classical." The standards set by these two masters continue to define our representations and evaluation criteria, but we rarely question the virtuosos who conceived them and the talent to which they owe their existence. One of these virtuosos is the Italian violinist Niccolò Mestrino. After performing in various orchestras in Italy, he is hired by Joseph Haydn as the first violin of the famous court orchestra of Prince Esterhazy in Eisenstadt. Later, he is appointed conductor of the opera Théâtre de Monsieur in Paris. The selection of works presented here for the first time shows that while Mestrino was an extraordinary violinist, he was also an accomplished composer.
