Allison De Groot & Rich Ruth

Description

Allison de Groot, a clawhammer banjo player from Winnipeg, explores old-time, bluegrass and folk traditions. Rich Ruth, a multi-instrumentalist based in Nashville, develops music at the crossroads of ambient, spiritual jazz, minimalism and electronic post-rock. Originally brought together to produce a solo album by de Groot, the two artists gradually began composing together. Recorded over nearly a year in Ruth’s studio in Nashville, the album brings de Groot’s acoustic banjo, treated with loops and delay effects, into dialogue with Ruth’s synthesizers. Violinist Patrick M'Gonigle and pedal steel guitarist Spencer Cullum enrich this blend of acoustic and electronic instruments. Between traditional folk and ambient atmospheres, the record gives rise to a shared musical language, where space, textures and the creative process matter as much as the melodies.
