Joseph Gibbs is one of the best-kept secrets of the 18th century; his music, marked by character and originality, combines the best of Italian virtuosity with a typical English humor in his style. Despite the evident genius of his compositions, the *8 Solos for Violin and Basso Continuo* (op. 1), published around 1746, are one of only two published collections of his work, and mentions of him became rare in the years following his death.
