Description

An icon of cool jazz, alto saxophonist Art Pepper released one of the last flagship albums of his early career in 1960, on the eve of a prison sentence and various incarcerations that would keep him out of the studio for several years. Between swing and ballads, 'Smack Up' brings together Jack Sheldon (trumpet), Pete Jolly (piano), Jimmy Bond (bass), and Frank Butler (drums) for a selection of ballads and uptempo numbers, concluding with a moving reinterpretation of Ornette Coleman's "Tears Inside." This edition is part of the "Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds" audiophile collection and has benefited from new analog mastering from the master tapes by Bernie Grundman. Original cover art and liner notes in meticulous packaging.
