More than any other album by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, Moanin’ (1958) – with Lee Morgan, Benny Golson, Bobby Timmons and Jymie Merritt – crystallizes the group’s bluesy and soulful sound and remains one of the great classics of hard bop. Initially released without a distinctive title, it was later renamed Moanin’ due to the success of Timmons’ opening track.
