More than any other album by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, Moanin’ (1958) – with Lee Morgan, Benny Golson, Bobby Timmons and Jymie Merritt – crystallizes the group’s bluesy and soulful sound and remains one of the great classics of hard bop. Initially released without a distinctive title, it was later renamed Moanin’ due to the success of Timmons’ opening track. It also introduces several compositions by Benny Golson that have become standards, including “Along Came Betty” and “Blues March”.
