Gunar Letzbor and his ensemble Ars Antiqua Austria present here two magnificent major works from two important Baroque centers of Catholic sacred music north of the Alps: originating from Salzburg, H.I.F. Biber's Vespers for 32 voices splendidly illustrate the significance of Salzburg Cathedral. Benedikt Anton Aufschnaiter was the chapel master at the Cathedral of Passau. His magnificent Missa “Lætamur in ea” is recorded here for the first time in the world. The composition of the Ars Antiqua Austria ensemble is inspired by that of the chapel of Salzburg Cathedral during Biber's time, and Letzbor adds to the excellent soloists the soprano and alto voices of the St. Florian Boys' Choir. Biber's Vespers thus shine with magnificent Baroque splendor, without ever being overloaded. The various choirs composed of singers, trumpets with timpani, cornetts, and strings offer a very transparent sound, allowing the listener to best follow the text and musical subtleties.
