Schubert: Arpeggione & 'Der Tod und Das Mädchen'

Description

New adaptation of the Arpeggione by Luigi Piovano. Recently appointed principal conductor of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia string orchestra, Luigi Piovano has put together a choice program for their first recording. He himself made an adaptation of Franz Schubert’s famous “Arpeggione” sonata, brilliantly taking on the role of soloist on a 5-string piccolo cello in order to get as close as possible to the arpeggione and thus allow the original octaves to be performed. The presence of the orchestra gives the work a new dimension and seems so natural that one comes to doubt it could ever have been otherwise. The quartet “Death and the Maiden” is performed here in Gustav Mahler’s 1896 version. The power of the orchestral ensemble is even more overflowing than in the quartet, if not devastating! The addition of the double bass to the musical framework gives the work greater depth and drama, darkening the colors and carrying the feelings and emotion to the firmament.
