Peter Benoit (1834-1901) radically transformed the Flemish musical landscape. In a predominantly French-speaking musical culture, he composed masterful choral works in Flemish, during outdoor concerts that were followed with great interest. Furthermore, he was the originator of several artistic institutions in Antwerp that, even today, give sound and shape to cultural life. From religious works in Latin to monumental oratorios in the vernacular, Benoit left behind a vast and timeless body of work. As a proud ambassador of this music, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra pays him a final tribute by gathering in this box set his greatest masterpieces, performed live with an international cast of soloists, choirs, and conductors.
