In this year of his 80th birthday, Gilardino has built a vast and varied body of work, received numerous prestigious awards, and is regularly performed by musicians of the highest caliber, such as the excellent guitarist featured on this recording, who plays his music around the world. The pieces gathered on this recording highlight a particular facet of Angelo Gilardino's poetic spirit: his fusion of the popular and the mystical, primarily built around a modal and diatonic writing style, which allows all listeners to rediscover places of love and suffering. Drawing its roots from Hispanic and Mediterranean culture, this music reveals better than any other the inherent depth of the guitar's sound: dark and crystalline at once, as penetrating and fleeting as humanity's most authentic experiences of love. The "Sonata del Guadalquivir," composed in 2004, draws inspiration from the myths of ancient Spain, buried in the mists of time. Inspired by the works of the greatest Italian nationalist composers, this piece is more evocative than affirmative, creating a distance that transcends any historical reference, any date or fashion. In 2001, during the transfer of Segovia's remains from the municipal cemetery to the crypt of a museum dedicated to the great guitarist, Frédéric Zigante asked Gilardino to compose a work in memory of Segovia, evoking his main stylistic preferences. The composer completed "Colloquo con Andrés Segovia" a year later. The composition, in ABA structure, contains iterations, metamorphoses, and rich transpositions, in the manner of an intimate and profound dialogue where the interlocutors share the story of an infinite closeness between two sensibilities, both deeply rooted in the world yet foreign to one another. The composer draws on the old Italian style dear to both musicians, from Ludovico Roncalli to Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco via Domenico Scarlatti, but presents it in an unprecedented way.
