Havergal Brian's (1876–1972) reputation as a late symphonist obscures the fact that he was one of the first composers of choral music for the vast market of amateur choirs thriving in Edwardian England. His choral songs range from simple unison sets for children's or women's voices to harmonically complex pieces designed to test the abilities of groups participating in the once-popular choral competitions in the British region. This second selection includes four canons that Brian wrote in the early 1920s as contrapuntal studies for his powerful Gothic Symphony.
