Anna Fedorova explores the Intrigues of the Darkness in highly virtuosic programmatic piano works. The journey from darkness to light begins with the formidable "Black Mass" Sonata by Scriabin. The piece represents a satanic ritual possessed by the specter of the Mephistophelian Liszt. Falla's Suite from L'Amour sorcier invokes a mysterious world, full of magic and ghostly apparitions. For Ravel, Gaspard de la nuit is a "romantic" work of "transcendental virtuosity." These extremely evocative pieces are based on prose poems by Aloysius Bertrand, notably describing a hanged man sighing on the gallows and a diabolical dwarf. Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition paints many nocturnal scenes but emerges into the light with The Great Gate of Kiev, where triumphant episodes alternate with moments of religious contemplation.
