With this third installment, Andris Nelsons continues his cycle of Shostakovich's symphonies with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, of which he is the principal conductor. He is also the new conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig; bolstered by these two appointments and leading a pioneering alliance between the two renowned institutions, he enjoys a reputation as one of the most exciting and innovative conductors on today's international stage. Following the previously released symphonies No. 4, 5, 8, 9, and 11, Nelsons here dedicates himself to symphonies No. 6 and 7, two symphonies written in the dark context of World War II, alongside the Suite from the music for King Lear, composed between the two symphonies, and the Festive Overture from 1947 suggesting "the state of mind of those who survived the difficult trials of the war years."
