The contemporary sacred music of Michael Tippett The oratorio A Child of Our Time by Michael Tippett was composed between 1939 and 1942 in direct response to the events leading up to (and including) the infamous Night of Broken Glass in November 1938 in Nazi Germany. Tippett chose the form of the oratorio for moments of reflection and meditation in the narrative. A work for choir, orchestra, and four soloists, it adopts a structure that owes much to Handel's Messiah. Rejecting Lutheran chorales and Jewish hymns, he ultimately opted for African American spirituals, present in the work. Sir Andrew Davis conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, with an exceptional quartet of soloists… and a unique Surround sound!
