Description

Andreas Staier has made a significant mark on the discography of the harpsichord and pianoforte with his informed and inspired interpretations. They have allowed us to discover Bach, Mozart, and Schubert in a new light... The great German keyboardist presents here his first solo album for Alpha Classics, ahead of other upcoming projects, and introduces for the first time his own compositions: "Two motifs constitute the common thread of this recording. The first is a very old cantus firmus, a melody in long values (...) The second is the sequence of intervals: octave – fifth – sixth – third: It is omnipresent in Western music, at least since the beginning of the Baroque era (...) My six pieces for harpsichord titled Anklänge were born from conversations I had several times with the composer Brice Pauset about what it means to compose in our time, and in particular what it means and implies to write for historical instruments. This led me to wonder how I could express and capture in notes my own conception of music, shaped by Byrd, Bach, and Schubert, but also by the music of the 20th and 21st centuries."
