This is the most anecdotal part of Anatoly Liadov's keyboard works, pieces for polite society, for salons, pieces to shine without too much difficulty, a whole repertoire that reminds us that the piano was also a piece of furniture that needed to be fed with sheet music. All of this is listened to like one peels petals, forgotten like everything charming, leaving only a certain pleasure that sometimes is spiced with a few strange harmonies, a bit of mischief, a deviation, fingers suddenly too swift, and one finds oneself not far from the Waltzes or Mazurkas of Scriabin. Olga Solovieva excels at uncovering those moments when the adornment of charm gives way to strangeness, showing how fine the boundary is and how it thins as one progresses through time: the Preludes of op. 27, the very spicy Pieces op. 39, the famous Music Box suddenly indicate the oddities of the miniaturist's universe. The pianist has left the ball, returned to his study, playing for himself in the fallen night.
