'What the Flood Leaves Behind' by Amy Helm is her third solo album. This album marks Amy Helm's breakthrough, the daughter of American roots legend Levon Helm, as a fully-fledged songwriter. Although written and recorded before the pandemic, the songs are prophetic and timely, resonating with warmth and comfort. Helm wrote or co-wrote almost all the songs on the album, produced by Joshua Kaufman (The Hold Steady, Hiss Golden Messenger, Josh Ritter). The album opens with Helm softly singing "Verse 23" written by M.C. Taylor (His Golden Messenger). The theme of acceptance resonates deeply with Helm and led to the album's title. "What the flood leaves behind," I love the way it says in the chorus, "is what we have to do," she emphasizes. "I love that calculation - the good and the bad and everything in between." Born into music as the daughter of the drummer/singer of the band Levon Helm and singer-songwriter Libby Titus, Helm grew up between Woodstock, NY, NYC, and Los Angeles. She is a founding member of the folk group Ollabelle and a long-time member of the Midnight Ramble Band.
