Winterberg, Hans : Musique de Chambre - Volume 2

Description

Hans Winterberg (1901-1991) : String Quartet No. 2, String Quartet No. 3, String Quartet No. 4 / World Premiere Recording
The life of composer Hans Winterberg (1901-91), born in Prague, reads like the outline of a detective novel. Having survived internment in the Terezín ghetto (Theresienstadt) as a Czech Jew, he settled after the war in Munich as a German citizen, and his music benefited from a number of broadcasts - but after his death, his estate disappeared into the vaults of a research institute and was placed under embargo, only emerging in 2015; since then, recordings and performances have revealed him as one of the major Czech voices of the 20th century. This first recording of three of his four string quartets - whose language is downstream of Janáček and Schoenberg, with folk roots refracted through mid-century Czech modernism - confirms Winterberg's position and underscores his importance as a solitary survivor of the group of young Czech composers whose infinite promise was extinguished during the Holocaust.
