The public loves albums that tell a story. And Amel Brahim-Djelloul also loves to tell stories. This story is beautiful because it describes a nearly perfect life curve.
It is primarily the story of a young girl born in Algiers. She first learns the violin, the instrument already chosen by her older brother, but quickly she prefers to turn to singing. Noticed, she is advised to continue her training in France. So the young girl crosses the Mediterranean, studies at the National School of Music, before joining the National Conservatory of Music in Paris.
It is then the story of a young woman who flourishes over the years on French and international lyrical stages: at the Paris Opera of course, but also at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, the Théâtre du Châtelet, or the Philharmonie de Paris, at the Lille Opera passing through the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam...
It is now the story of a woman, emerging from confinement, who decides to take a musical look at her journey by reinterpreting the traditional repertoire, this Kabyle music that she has heard since her birth and that has accompanied her over the years. It all begins in June 2020, with a cover of the song Wi b?an by Idir, an artist she sincerely loves, with whom she had sung in duet, and whose recent passing has deeply affected her. A video that immediately touches the heart of the public.
"Wi b?an" means "the one who wants," and from then on Amel knows what she wants. She wants an album that reflects all her love for the Kabyle repertoire, but also an album that resembles her.
