L'album solo de Alisa Weilerstein, la violoncelliste phare de Decca. The 20th century was crucial for the affirmation of the cello's place as a solo instrument. Between 1900 and 1960, more than 160 works were written for solo cello, with a centerpiece: the Sonata by Zoltán Kodály composed in 1915. Alternating notably between chords on the lower strings and left-hand pizzicatos, this avant-garde sonata employs numerous instrumental techniques that explode the sound palette of the cello. It also sets the tone for the entire album by giving it a folkloric imprint that can be found in the works of Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov, or Chinese composer Bright Sheng. As for the Suite by Gaspar Cassadó, its first movement explicitly cites Kodály's Sonata. Alisa Weilerstein ardently defends new music and is committed to expanding the cello repertoire. The intensity of her playing has regularly been praised, as well as the spontaneity and sensitivity of her interpretations.
