The concept of truth, what was true for Shostakovich or Korngold, seems to be a matter of personal artistic integrity. The same goes for the world premiere recording of Philip Glass's Symphony No. 13. Charged with honoring the memory of journalist Peter Jennings during a time of global conflict, Glass himself pushed back against the idea that music has the ability to express precise ideas about truth. Glass's thirteenth symphony was composed between 2020 and 2022, largely during the lockdown period. Following a series of large-scale symphonic works, Glass's new symphony is one of the shortest at just 22 minutes and defies calm and reflection across its three movements. This is the second recording of Korngold's concerto by James Ehnes.
