While both are known for their creative jazz, it is surprising to hear Alban Darche and Loïs Le Van in this register, and that's a good thing because surprise is what they wanted. Starting by surprising themselves, going against their own habits. There was this idea of meeting, getting to the essence, to the obvious, to pure emotion, provoking magic and being able to capture it. - - They invited 10 'voices' with strong, bright, and assertive personalities to come and record a few tracks. Without rehearsals, without pre-established arrangements, or any other directives. Just the names of the pieces, chosen from a broad list established with each participant. They agree on one (or two) keys, and that's it. An evening and a meal preceded each studio session to ensure the encounter was total, both human and musical. Each recording in the studio began with a take without any prior instructions. They settle in and play, Jonathan Marcoz runs the tapes. Trust, listening, musical personality, and that's all. Far from a Jam atmosphere, there has always been an awareness that everything would be recorded, that an album was being constructed. And an album is something you listen to and re-listen to. There has always been the awareness that nothing could be redone, that each note had to be 'right', that each musical proposal had to be strong and embraced. That the result had to sound 'finished', something to be proud of. Alban and Loïs do not just pass the baton; they follow each other, complement each other, intertwine. They are shadow and light in turn. It’s not '1 + 1', but truly 2. Trios, a duo in three dimensions.
