Commissioned at the request of Jacqueline Kennedy for the inauguration of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. in 1971, Mass ranks among Leonard Bernstein’s greatest masterpieces. Far from being a simple musical arrangement of the Latin liturgy, Bernstein’s Roman Catholic mass is a broadly eclectic theatrical event. A masterpiece that places this 400-year-old religious rite in a tense and dramatic dialogue with music and lyrics in the vernacular language of the 20th century. A dialectic far from insignificant, which at the time sought to explore the crisis of faith and the cultural collapse of the post-Kennedy era. A truly avant-garde work, MASS will return to the Kennedy Center in September 2022 on the occasion of the Kennedy Center’s 50th anniversary. An anniversary that Sony Classical is celebrating with the release of this superb remastered 2-CD edition, in collaboration with the Leonard Bernstein office. What’s more, this edition also includes a book, previously unreleased photos and facsimiles, a synopsis, a booklet and new liner notes. The work will be conducted by Francesca Zambello, artistic director of Welsh National Opera, and performed by the National Symphony Orchestra and Will Liverman, winner of the 2020 Marian Anderson Award.
